Super Typhoon Haiyan Philippines Response

Mission in Philippines

November 2013

November 15, 2013
The United Nations has categorized this emergency at the highest level and has responded by mobilizing its entire humanitarian system. Right now, global assets are being moved into place.

GlobalMedic is responding, has expanded its operations and is now working in Cebu, Iloilo, and Tacloban.

Cebu will be the core of GlobalMedic’s logistics for inbound humanitarian airfreight and sea freight. This team is tasked with installing water purification units, distributing water purification tablets, supporting medical clinics, delivering essential medicines, and completing quick intervention projects. Quick intervention projects are designed to spend funds procuring goods in the local economy, provide the immediate delivery of aid, debris clearance, and repairs to shelters and schools. The support team in Cebu is handling shipments of inbound humanitarian cargo and forwarding those shipments to support the Tacloban Operation. GlobalMedic‘s Cebu team will also support other operations through its forward operating bases.

In Iloilo, GlobalMedic has a nine member Canadian team leading relief efforts. Team members include paramedics, firefighters, nurses, and an experienced shelter specialist. The team is distributing water purification tablets; installing portable water purification units in isolated underserviced areas; supporting mobile medical clinics treating survivors; delivering essential medicines, and completing quick intervention projects.

In Tacloban, GlobalMedic has a four member Canadian team carrying water purification tablets and a mid sized water purification unit capable of purifying 40 litres a minute. The team is tasked with providing clean drinking water. They are currently servicing Tanuan which is about 20km southeast of Tacloban. A support convoy of vehicles, rescuers, health workers and water engineers is providing support. This area is heavily damaged. There is no power, no clean water, food is scarce, and fuel is not locally available. The operations are being supported by air and by road.

GlobalMedic has mobilized and delivered the following assets to the Philippines:
- 5 million water purification tablets
- 12 water purification units
- $100,000 worth of essential medicines

Additional teams are being deployed in an effort to ramp up operations.

All donations made to GlobalMedic for our Philippines response will be matched by the Canadian Federal Government. You can donate here.

GlobalMedic's four person Rapid Response Team has departed Toronto for the Philippines. They will meet with our local team to increase the capacity of the mission. Our RRT is brining an additional water unit, chlorine pucks to purify 1000 litre water holding tanks and other supplies.

November 9, 2013

While communication lines are still down in the worst affected areas, we are beginning to see the full extent of the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan. According to local sources, the death toll may be as high as 1200. Currently, our team in the Philippines is positioning water purification units to help people affected by the disaster. In the next 24 hours, our Canadian team will head to the area to provide support and increase the capacity of this program. We will be running an Explorer water purification unit which can purify 65 litres of dirty water per minute. We will also be running our Aqua Response 10 unit which can purify 38 litres of water a minute. Additionally, we are sending 1.4 million 1 litre water purification tablets.

November 8, 2013

In the early hours of November 8th, Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in Eastern Samar province in the Philippines. It had maximum sustained winds of 315 km/hr making it the strongest storm ever to make landfall and the fourth most powerful storm ever recorded. Four people are confirmed dead and upwards of 700,000 people were forced to evacuate. Over 18 million people live in the typhoons path.

The cities of Tacloban and Ormoc in Leyte province were the worst hit. Metal roofs in Tacloban were ripped off and floated down flooded streets, while the towns airport was said to have sustained major damage. Electricity is also out which raises concerns that the water supply is inaccessible. Communications have been cut off, roads are damaged and blocked with fallen trees and flash floods and landslides have been reported.

GlobalMedic has activated its local response capacity. For years, GlobalMedic teams have responded to disasters in the Philippines. We have a core group of trained volunteers that we have equipped with large water purification units. They represent our first line of response. We are air freighting 1.4 million water purification tablets capable of purifying 1.4 million litres of water to support their work.
Teams have been deployed with the task of providing victims with clean water and conducting assessments to help us determine the assets that we need to further respond. Given the magnitude of the storm we expect the needs to rise and we will augment our response based on those needs.
